Thirsty for God

How do you know if your love for Christ has grown cold?

Are you thirsty for God? The Psalmist writes: “O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water … Because your steadfast love is better than life, my lips will praise you” (Psalm 63:1-3).

Three Groups in Christian Gatherings

There are three types of people in any Christian gathering. The first group are those who are Christian in name only. They say they follow Christ, but it is a false following much like the five foolish virgins who did not know God personally and He rejected them (Matthew 25:1-12). The second group are those who follow Him at a distance, much like Peter during the arrest and trial of Jesus. The third group are those who feed on Him daily no matter what trouble comes their way. This group is thirsty for God.

Psalm 63

The sixty-third psalm communicates that our soul is to feast on God daily. The psalmist is king David and he is in the desert of Judah. From the Biblical data, we see David in the desert twice. The first was before he was king when king Saul wanted to kill him. The other time he was the king, and his very own son Absalom wanted to dethrone him. These had to be heart-wrenching events knowing that the ones who turned on you were those closest to you.

This psalm reminds us that our soul must thirst for God, cry out for God and depend on God. King David knew this personally. He knew that his soul thirsted and cried out for God as he expresses here in this psalm. He knew his soul must depend on God to get him through the day. Many do not even know that it is the God of the Bible who alone will satisfy their soul desires. They are seeking satisfaction in other things. They are seeking refuge in other things to meet their needs.

Is Your Soul Thirsty for God?

Are you willing to develop that thirst for God? When the soul is being nourished daily it experiences a deep communion with God because it is drinking from the living water that is Jesus Christ. David always came back to the truth of the love of God - “Because your steadfast love is better than life, my lips will praise you”. One way we can help one another is to encourage each other to read God’s Word, meditate on Him and have a regular prayer life. When we pursue these things daily, we are seeking God’s face. Jesus calls us to be satisfied with, in, and by God. Has your love grown cold? Take a cue from David … long for God!
